It was all glitz and glamour for Francis Emmanuel Mautin and Aroh Ejaeta Peter at the just concluded 9th Annual Maritime Students and Youth Conference as both Students of the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT) emerged the Overall Best Graduated Maritime Students in Nigeria for 2023 and 2024 academic sessions respectively.
While Francis, a HND Fisheries Technology student of the foremost maritime college graduated in 2023 with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.77 equivalent of Distinction to clinch the coveted Capt Sunday Umoren’s Award of Academic Excellence; his counterpart, Aroh Ejaeta Peter of the same school graduated in 2024 with CGPA of 3.98 (Distinction) in Nautical Science HND Level to also claim the same prize.
By emerging the Overall Best Graduated Maritime Students in Nigeria for both years, the duo won an Award and Certificate of Academic Excellence from Platforms Communications, organisers of the AMSAY Conference as well as the sum of One Hundred Thousand Naira Cash Prize (#100,000:00) each from Capt Sunday Umoren, sponsor of the Overall Best Graduated Maritime Students Award.

Speaking before making the award presentations to the Winners at the event on Tuesday, the Convener of the AMSAY Conference, Mr Sylvanus Obasi stated that the aim of the initiative is to promote academic excellence and stimulate healthy academic competition amongst Nigerian maritime students.
He however, expressed gratitude to the various organisations and individuals who have identified with the brand by choosing to sponsor cash prizes for various categories of the award.
Obasi recalled that the Best Graduated Maritime Students Awards (BEGMASA) was conceived and integrated into the AMSAY Conference in 2017 and since then several maritime students have benefited from the initiative by way of winning cash prizes, scholarships and job opportunities.
