68-Year-Old Cleric Battles Worsening Spinal Injury, Needs N5.5m For Surgery

The call for compassion echoed loudly today in Lagos as Platform Reporters issued a humanitarian appeal on behalf of Rev. Godwin Chukwuanude, a 68-year-old cleric whose health has deteriorated significantly over the years.

For Rev. Chukwuanude, life took a painful turn when a spinal cord injury struck, altering his mobility and limiting his once-active pastoral duties. What began as a medical challenge soon transformed into a long battle for survival.

The widowed clergyman, originally from Otokwu Mmaku in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, has endured years of discomfort, therapy, and emotional strain.

His condition worsened after the passing of his wife five years ago, leaving him to navigate both grief and illness alone.

With each passing year, the pain grew sharper, and the hope for healing dimmed.

Yet the reverend held on, seeking help wherever it could be found, moving from hospital to hospital in search of relief.

According to Platform Reporters, Rev. Chukwuanude has visited multiple medical centres, including the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, where he underwent initial examinations and conservative treatment.

He also sought specialist care at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, one of Nigeria’s top facilities for bone-related complications, but the intervention provided only temporary relief.

Presently, the ageing cleric is receiving therapeutic care at the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu.

Doctors there have advised that only a

surgical procedure can offer him a real chance at recovery and restored mobility.

The surgery, however, comes at a cost far beyond his means.

Medical experts placed the required amount at ₦5,500,000, a sum needed to carry out the spinal operation that could ease his pain and save him from a lifetime of immobility.

For a man who has spent decades offering prayers, counselling, and comfort to others, the moment has come when he must rely on the kindness of the public.

Today, Rev. Chukwuanude is appealing to Nigerians to support him in raising the needed funds.

Family sources say the cleric has exhausted every personal resource while pursuing treatment over the years. With no stable income and no spouse to support him, the burden of medical bills has become overwhelming.

Platform Reporters, in issuing the appeal, described the situation as urgent and heartbreaking, noting that early intervention could prevent the condition from worsening further.

The management of the media organisation called on philanthropists, religious institutions, humanitarian groups, and well-meaning Nigerians to extend a hand of compassion.

They stressed that contributing to the reverend’s medical fund would not only restore his health but also revive the life of a man who has dedicated his years to serving others.

The appeal encourages donors to remember that even the smallest support can make a difference in securing the surgery that could change the cleric’s life.

As the call goes out, hopes remain high that kind-hearted individuals will rally around Rev. Chukwuanude, offering him a chance to walk again, live without pain, and continue the mission he has long embraced.
