What began in 2016 as a modest gathering of maritime students has today evolved into one of the most influential youth-driven platforms in Nigeria’s maritime sector, touching lives, restoring dreams, and creating career opportunities for countless cadets and young marine professionals across the country.
The Annual Maritime Students and Youth Conference (AMSAY Conference), formerly known as “A Day With Nigerian Maritime Students,” has steadily carved a niche for itself as a rallying point for academic excellence, mentorship, networking, and professional transformation within the Nigerian maritime industry.
Over the years, beneficiaries of the conference have continued to share compelling stories of how the initiative reshaped their journeys at moments when hope appeared lost. From unemployed graduates to award-winning professionals, AMSAY has become a bridge between classroom ambition and industry reality.
One of such remarkable testimonies came from Engr. Oluwadamilola Adebamipe, a First Class Marine Engineering graduate under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP), who recounted how joblessness nearly forced her into abandoning her maritime dreams despite her academic brilliance and professional qualifications.

According to her, after countless unsuccessful job applications and years of frustration, her life changed dramatically during the 2017 AMSAY Conference where she openly shared her struggles before top maritime stakeholders. That emotional testimony reportedly caught the attention of industry leaders who later facilitated her employment opportunity at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), where she now works as a Chief Engineer.
For Adesakin Adekola, another beneficiary, the conference became the turning point in his long search for mandatory sea-time experience after graduating from the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology. Through interactions and exposure at the 2019 edition of the conference, he eventually secured sea-time placement, completed his Certificate of Competency, and rose to become a Second Officer while also preparing to obtain his Chiefmate certificate soon.
The impact of the AMSAY Conference has not been limited to employment opportunities alone. Several award recipients have described the platform as a source of motivation and personal inspiration that strengthened their resilience toward academic and professional excellence.

Nnamdi Ezinwanne, who emerged as one of the outstanding awardees at the 2018 conference, revealed that the recognition she received from Platforms Communications became a constant reminder that hard work and determination never go unnoticed.
According to her, the awards continue to motivate her through every difficult phase of her academic journey.

Another inspiring story emerged from Joyce Adoga, a graduate of Nautical Science from Delta State Maritime Polytechnics, Burutu, whose participation at the 2025 edition of the conference reportedly unlocked sponsorship support for her mandatory maritime certifications and training courses after years of financial struggle.
Her testimony revealed how a simple interaction during a panel session led to a life-changing intervention from maritime lawyer, Dr. Emeka Akabogu, SAN, whose law firm eventually sponsored all her professional training requirements, giving her a renewed opportunity to pursue her sea-time ambitions and maritime career.

Similarly, Ogwo Jane, the Overall Best Graduating Maritime Student in Nigeria for 2018, credited the conference for broadening her professional exposure and network, noting that the recognition and scholarship opportunities she received at the event contributed immensely to her academic growth and eventual Master’s degree pursuit abroad in Poland.
For Umahi Wilfred, winner of the Best Graduating Maritime Management Technology Student award in 2019, attending the AMSAY Conference was more than just receiving an award. It became the pathway to securing an internship opportunity with Starzs Investment Company Limited, one of the respected maritime firms in Nigeria.

Observers within the maritime sector have continued to describe the conference as one of the few industry-driven initiatives genuinely committed to bridging the gap between maritime students and industry stakeholders. Through technical sessions, paper presentations, mentorship interactions, speech competitions, and award ceremonies, AMSAY has consistently created an enabling platform for young professionals to thrive.

Speaking on the broader significance of the initiative, maritime enthusiast, Sunday Bankole described the AMSAY Conference as “more than a conference,” stressing that it has become a movement that inspires students, rewards excellence, and restores confidence in the future of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
As the conference continues to expand its influence yearly, many beneficiaries insist that beyond the plaques, certificates, and applause lies something far more valuable – hope.

For many maritime students battling uncertainty, unemployment, and career stagnation, the AMSAY Conference has become a beacon proving that recognition, opportunity, and transformation are still possible within Nigeria’s maritime sector.
