LAGOS – The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has outlined eight key pillars for successfully running a transport and logistics company in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 15th Maritime Career Mentorship Programme (M-CAMP) held by Platforms Communications on September 4, 2026, Mr. Olubodun Ogunyakin, representing the President of CILT, Dr. Boboye Opeyemi, said logistics business in Nigeria requires more than owning vehicles – it demands professional standards, regulatory compliance and business acumen.
According to him, the pillars include:
1. Business Registration & Regulatory Compliance with CAC, CILT, NPA and Nigerian Shippers’ Council;
2. Fleet Management & Maintenance with scheduled upkeep;
3. Cost Management & Pricing through route costing and fuel efficiency;
4. Technology & Digital Tracking using GPS and digital freight platforms;
5. Infrastructure & Operational Challenges including road network and port delays;
6. Customer Service & Last Mile Delivery;
7. Safety & Risk Management; and
8. Human Capital & Training.
Ogunyakin said CILT’s role is to ensure professional standards, industry regulation, advocacy and member training & certification.
He concluded that the Future Logistics Professional = Operational Knowledge + Business Acumen + Tech Savvy, urging young professionals to combine operational knowledge with digital competence to remain competitive.
