Ahead of the forth-coming 8th Annual Maritime Students And Youth Conference (AMSAY), the Continental Vice President, Women In Maritime Africa (WIMA) Chief Carolyn Akum Ufere has offered to gift the sum of Fifty Thousand Naira (#50,000:00) as Cash Prize to the Winner of Best Graduating Maritime Students Award (BEGMASA) for “Maritime Security and Safety Management” course.
Chief Ufere made her intention known over the weekend in a message sent to the Convener of the yearly industry Conference and Managing Director of Platforms Communications, Mr Sylvanus Obasi.
By sponsoring the cash prize for the Award, it means the award will be instituted in her name and honour as: “Chief Carolyn Akum Ufere’s Award of Academic Excellence For Best Graduating Maritime Security & Safety Management Student”.
Chief Ufere or his representative would present the Award plaque and the Cash Prize to the winner at the occasion of the 2024 AMSAY Conference scheduled to hold on May 27 this year and in all subsequent editions of the Conference.
Responding, Mr Obasi thanked Chief Carolyn Akum Ufere for her remarkable support, especially for reaching out and offering to do this in response to the organisers’ public request earlier, soliciting stakeholders’ sponsorship of the awards cash prizes. This according to Mr Obasi is unique and a show of determination and zeal to make impacts.
Speaking further, the foremost maritime journalist reiterated the commitment of Platforms Communications in championing youth advocacy, youth empowerment and in contributing its quota towards the succession plan needs of the Nigerian maritime industry.

Recall that after the maiden edition of AMSAY Conference in 2016 also known as “A Day With Nigerian Maritime Students”, by 2017, Platforms Communications birthed the BEGMASA initiative and integrated it into the AMSAY Conference and since then, over 40 maritime students have been honoured and benefited from the initiative; even as some have published their testimonials commending the impact of the program in their academic success, self confidence and determination in their maritime career pursuit.
