The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) was last weekend thrown into a mood of jubilation and euphoric celebration following the ratification of the election of its President General, Comrade (Prince) Adewale Adeyanju, into three prestigious positions at the 46th International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Congress held in Marrakesh, Morocco.

PLATFORM REPORTERS recall that at the ITF Africa Regional Conference earlier held in March 2024 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Comrade Adeyanju was elected into three highly coveted positions, which have now been successfully ratified as follows: Vice President of ITF Global; Executive Board Member and Chairman of ITF Africa Region.

These elections, according to MWUN are a resounding testament to Comrade Adeyanju’s progressive leadership, tireless dedication to advancing the rights of workers, and his pivotal role in the global maritime sector. His election marks a historic moment for Nigeria and Africa, underscoring his ability to unite and champion the cause of workers on an international scale.

PLATFORM REPORTERS gathered that as Vice President of ITF Global, Comrade Adeyanju is expected to help steer the organization’s strategic direction, ensuring that the voices of transport workers worldwide are amplified. His position as an Executive Board Member places him at the heart of critical decisions, while his chairmanship of the ITF Africa Region reinforces his commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by African transport workers and furthering the continent’s development.

In a press statement issued on Saturday, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria said, “the union and indeed the entire Nigerian labour movement celebrate this monumental achievement, recognizing Comrade Adeyanju as a beacon of excellence, resilience, and dedication to the cause of workers. His remarkable leadership continues to uplift the maritime industry in Nigeria and Africa at large, positioning it as a key player in the global transportation sector.

“We congratulate Comrade Adeyanju on this well-deserved ratification and pledge our continued support as he leads with wisdom and a progressive vision for workers worldwide”, the union stated.
