Nigeria has taken a decisive step toward unlocking the economic potential of its maritime domain with the official launch of Blue Economy TV (BETV), Africa’s first dedicated television channel focused exclusively on the blue economy.
The landmark initiative, unveiled in Lagos, is the brainchild of the Blue Economy Academy (BEA), a growing thought leadership and capacity-building institution committed to advancing Nigeria’s ocean-based economic transformation.
National Momentum Behind the Initiative:
At the launch event, the Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging the blue economy as a key driver of growth, trade, and sustainability.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy and General Manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr. Emmanuel Oluwadamilola Damilola, described the platform as a critical instrument for national development.
“Blue Economy TV is the voice for our waters… a platform that will transform potential into a movement.”
He emphasized Lagos’ strategic positioning, noting that the state’s extensive coastline and waterways already support a significant share of Nigeria’s international trade and hold vast untapped opportunities across transport, fisheries, tourism, and marine services.

A Strategic Media Platform for Economic Transformation:
BETV is designed as more than a conventional broadcast channel. It represents a media-driven intervention to reshape public consciousness and policy direction around Nigeria’s maritime assets.
According to the Founder of the Blue Economy Academy, the initiative is anchored on a clear national vision:
“A Nigeria that prospers by water.”
He noted that despite Nigeria’s extensive marine resources, the country has historically underutilized its water-based economy due to limited awareness and fragmented engagement.
BETV aims to address this gap by:
• Driving awareness across all levels of society
• Providing actionable knowledge for policymakers and industry players
• Reframing national discourse through a “blue economy lens”
Programming to Inform, Engage, and Influence
The channel will deliver a wide range of programming focused on the blue economy ecosystem, including:

• Blue Morning Nigeria – A daily flagship program examining national issues through a maritime lens
• Watchers of the Seas – A panel of maritime journalists analyzing sector developments
• Blue Economy News – Dedicated coverage of industry trends and policy developments
• Documentaries and Special Features – Highlighting innovation, technology, and opportunities in the ocean economy
Live programming is scheduled to commence immediately via digital platforms, with plans underway to secure broader satellite distribution in the coming months.
Tackling “Sea Blindness” and Unlocking Opportunity:
Industry observers have noted that the launch of BETV comes at a critical time, as Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy and explore non-oil revenue streams.

The platform is expected to play a central role in addressing what stakeholders describe as “sea blindness” — a widespread lack of awareness about the economic value of the country’s waterways and marine resources.
Through consistent storytelling, policy engagement, and stakeholder collaboration, BETV is positioned to:
• Promote investment in maritime sectors
• Support youth employment through fisheries and marine industries
• Strengthen national dialogue on sustainability and climate resilience
• Enhance Nigeria’s global positioning within the blue economy

A Movement, Not Just a Media Platform:
With strong backing from government stakeholders, growing interest from industry players, and increasing media attention, BETV is emerging as a catalyst for a broader blue economy movement in Nigeria and across Africa.
The launch signals a shift from passive awareness to active engagement, as the country begins to align its economic future with the opportunities embedded in its waters.
