LAGOS – The Nigerian Ports Authority, Lagos Port Complex on Wednesday held a sensitization program to enforce minimum safety standards for truck drivers operating within the Lagos port corridor.
The event, well attended by truck owners and drivers, had dignitaries stressing the need to reduce road accidents and fatalities involving trucks around the ports.
Port Manager, Lagos Port Complex, Mr Adebowale Lawal, said the program became necessary to ensure accident-free operations. He acknowledged the role of truckers in seamless port operations and assured them of NPA’s cooperation to guarantee free flow of traffic within the port.
He also issued a stern warning: , “After this sensitization, no truck driver will be allowed entry into the port without a reflective safety jacket.”.
Also speaking, President of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners, AMATO, Chief Remi Ogungbemi, urged drivers to avoid alcohol and other stimulants while driving.
A major highlight of the program was the distribution of 1,000 reflective safety jackets to truck drivers, including members of AMATO and the National Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO.
The program, coordinated by Chief Port Safety Officer, Engr Abdullahi Kakale, ended with truck drivers pledging renewed commitment to observe minimum safety standards to minimize accidents in the Lagos port corridor.
